Hello, do you hear us?! Workshop on climate action for young people

On October 22, Skaftfell offers a workshop on climate change awareness and climate action for children aged 8 and older.

The workshop starts at 10:00 in Skaftfell, Austurvegur 42, 3rd floor, and finishes there at 14:00.

At some point in between the group will take a short walk around town. A simple lunch will be provided.

Participation is free. To register please email fraedsla@old.skaftfell.is.

In this creative workshop, developed and led by Anna Margrét Ólafsdóttir and Signý Jónsdóttir, we will discuss our awareness of climate change in the present and in the future. What do we know? What do we want to know? Are our concerns being heard? How can we address coming changes with courage? Starting from these questions we will produce a script for a radio program which will be broadcast live on Seyðisfjörður Community Radio 107.1 FM on Saturday at 13:00. We will also begin to build a collective sculpture, a cairn, that will grow over the coming years and stand for positive motivation in the fight against climate change.

Anna Margrét Ólafsdóttir, artist, and Signý Jónsdóttir, designer, have been working together on creative projects for children and adults for several years. While they were living in Seyðisfjörður in 2020/2021 they taught at the school and the kindergarden. Now Signý is teaching at the Iceland Academy of the Arts (LHÍ) and at the LungA School in Seyðisfjörður, and Anna Margrét is studying Art Education at LHÍ.

The workshop is initiated and supported by the Nordic Alliance of Artists’ Residencies on Climate Action (NAARCA), of which Skaftfell is a member. NAARCA is a collaborative project researching the role of artist residency programs in the search for climate action strategies. In the context of climate education it investigates how art education can contribute to counteracting climate anxiety in children and to fostering young people’s empowerment in the face of the climate crisis.
