Geiri’s house, the former home of native artists Ásgeir Jón Emilsson at Oddagata 4c, graces Skaftfell’s greeting card.
Geiri was creatively compulsive and decorated his house with great care. His story is unique and today the house stands as a testimony of the social conditions of hearing impairment in the past. Oddagata has been in charge of the center in recent years and has been held virtually unchanged since Geiri past away in 1999.
Over the past two years Geiri’s house has been closed to the public and with the help of generous supporters considerable work has gone into reconstruction, advised by the Technical Museum of East Iceland. The entire house has been painted outdoors, murals repainted, the door repaired, drainage was placed plus various bits and pieces. Indoors the kitchen items have been registered and the interiors examined. The aim is to reopened the house to the public in spring 2015.
Skaftfell would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who have contributed the project. The center is especially thankful to Björn Roth for his donation to the house.
