The Skaftfell residency program 2018 is now in full swing, and most residency places have been confirmed for this season. Out of 322 applications, 42 artists from all over the world have been invited to participate in Skaftfell’s self-directed residency program and in its thematic residency “Printing Matter”. The artists were selected by an external panel appointed by Skaftfell.
The self-directed residency program aims to create an environment for inspiration, focus, reflection and experiment; to encourage artists to experience life and work in a unique micro community where creativity is applied to the everyday; to foster a sense of community between artists and the public in the rural setting of East Iceland; and to provide conditions that stimulate the dialogue between art and life. During their residency the artists live and work in four historical houses in Seyðisfjörður. They stay mostly for one or two months, but residency periods can be as long as six months.
Skaftfell’s current artists-in-residence are:
Eliso Tsintsabadze (Georgia) + Pavel Filkov (Russia), Jacob Goldman (USA), Pétur Magnússon (Iceland), and Isabel Beavers (USA) + Laine Rettmer (USA).
For the rest of the year Skaftfell is looking forward to welcoming:
Ananda Serné (Netherlands), Angelica Falkeling (Netherlands) + Connie Butler (UK), Dagmar Subrtová (Czech Republic), Dana Neilson (Canada) + Tuomo Savolainen (Finland), Elena Mazzi (Italy), Emma Hammarén (Sweden), Grace Munakata (USA), Hannimari Jokinen (Finland) + Joseph Sam-Essandoh (Germany/Ghana), Itty Neuhaus (USA), Jemila MacEwan (Australia), Joey Fauerso (USA), Karen Werner (USA), Nathan Hall (USA), Philipp Valenta (Germany), and Rán Jónsdóttir (Iceland).
In 2018 Skaftfell is able to allocate one 2-month residency grant through the ongoing partnership with Goethe Institut Dänemark. The recipient of the Goethe Institut residency grant in 2018 will be Philipp Valenta (Germany).
Skaftfell’s thematic residency, Printing Matter, hosts 14 artists this year. The program focuses on printmaking and artist bookmaking, with the aim of creating a platform for exchange, discussion, and collaboration amongst fellow artists from various disciplines. Printing Matter is developed and guided by Danish artist and graphic designer Åse Eg Jørgensen and Litten Nystrøm and realised in collaboration with the Technical Museum of East Iceland, where the artists have access to working facilities and printmaking equipment. The residency takes place in two groups, in February and in September.
The participating artists in 2018 are:
Ash Kilmartin (New Zealand), Camille Lamy (Canada), Christiane Bergelt (Germany), Gill Partington (UK), Katalin Kuse (Germany), Katherine Leedale (UK), Lucia Gašparovičová (Slovakia), Mari Anniina Mathlin (Finland), Miriam McGarry (Australia), Nathalie Brans (Netherlands), Patrick Blenkarn (Canada), Rabia Ali (Pakistan), Rosie Flanagan (Australia/Slovenia), Wilma Vissers (Netherlands)
Skaftfell is very much looking forward to welcoming all these artists, and to seeing and hearing their thoughts and work processes. Future events involving the residency artists – artist talks, exhibitions, open studios, public workshops, and more – will be announced throughout the year.
